Your Democratic Union

Norwich Arts SU is a democratic organisation, and as such, we welcome and encourage student decision-making in every aspect of our governance.

One way students can be engaged in the SU is through our Democratic Structure which is made up of 4 parts:

Academic Affairs & Representation Council (AARC)

The place for all things educational. This is the place where students can shape SU policy that affects their day-to-day course experience. Student Reps, Part-Time Officers, and the President of Education & Representation sit as voting members on this council. All students are welcome to attend to observe, put forward motions, and take part in debate.

Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Welfare Council (EDIWC)

The place for all community driven discussions in the SU. This is where SU policy on barriers to access, inclusion, and celebration take place. Liberation Officers, Nominated Members, and the President of Community & Welfare sit as voting members on this council. All students are welcome to attend to observe, put forward motions, and take part in debate.

Executive Committee

The place where decisions of the councils are signed off and implemented. The job of the Executive Committee is to discuss and decide how to enact the policies AARC and EDIWC have agreed. It is also a place to ensure there is no duplication of work, and where emergency sessions can be convened.

The President of Education & Representation, President of Community & Welfare, a Nominated Member of AARC, a Nominated Member of EDICW, and a Nominated Part-Time Officer sit as voting members on this committee. All students are welcome to attend to observe, bring forward emergency motions, and take part in debate.

Trustee Board

The place where the SU and its staff are held to account, ensuring it meets its legal and charitable responsibilities. The Trustee Board is made up of the President of Education & Representation, President of Community & Welfare, SU Student Trustees, and External Specialists. Students and their representatives maintain a majority on the Trustee Board.

Have an idea for us to discuss, or a motion you want passing at our next council meeting?

All students can put forward motions to be debated and voted on at AARC and EDIWC. If you have a motion you would like the SU to make a stance on, or if you have an idea for how the SU can enact change in our community, this is the place to do that.
