What are Community Circles?

A community circle is a space for students with shared lived experience to find their people and develop a sense of community and belonging as well as friendships across the university. The intention behind the initiative is for there to be year round opportunities to meet people who share your background and identity and foster a sense of belonging and community within underrepresented groups. The SU will run three meet ups per year, with the potential for more socials co-created with or organised by students.

This project is now a year old, and faced some operational challenges in it's first year. We are hoping to recruit a student who can help us improve the initiative with their fresh perspectives and unique ideas.

The SU will run seven community circles: Pride Community Circle, Trans and Non Binary Community Circle, Disabled Community Circle, BAME Community Circle, Mature Community Circle, Women's Community Circle and International Community Circle

  • ownership over the Community Circles initiative* thus planning, promoting and improving the project with support from the Communities Project Manager

  • organising low cost social activities for each community circle, working with students to ensure the circle meets the needs of each group, as well as other activities based on your own ideas
  • attending Community Circle events and interacting with students throughout these in various ways depending on context; for example, in a situation where there is very low attendance this could include facilitating students speaking to each other or chatting to them yourself, while if there is a big turnout it would be finding students who aren’t being included in group activity and ensuring they are comfortable

Imposter syndrome kicking in?

Impostor Syndrome is the overwhelming feeling that you don't deserve your success. It can convince us that we are not as intelligent, creative, or talented as we may seem. It often strikes when applying for a job, and has long been thought to disproportionately affect marginalised groups.

Experience of the relevant areas of work, or any work, is not necessary. Applications are assessed holistically.

If you think you could make a difference in this role but are unsure of anything about it why not arrange an informal conversation and we’ll help you decide whether you’d like to apply. To do this email us on studentsunion@norwichuni.ac.uk

Typical Working Day

These roles will be office based with some opportunities to work remotely. We are also open to discussion about how hours will be split across the week; we welcome flexible working arrangements so that you can fit this role around your studies and other commitments. We understand the importance of your studies, and we will work towards fitting the job around your studies rather than your studies around the job. This role may include some out of hours work and how this will work will be decided by you and your line manager. If you have any questions about the flexibility of this role please contact us and we are more than happy to answer any questions.
